I have always been interested in creepy stuff as a concept. I'm easily spooked, but it doesn't stop me from being curious. These my few and very basic favorites:
movies
I wish I was braver. Most of the movies I've watched are psychological horror or suspense because that's what scares me the most. But also because i'll faint if i see a screamer.
- They look like people: i watched this like three times.
- Skinamarink: it was on mubi when i still had a subscription. to a lot of people it wasn't scary but it really made me remember what it felt like being alone and frightened as a child.
Books
Also more on the thriller category but this is my list and i get to put anything i want:
- the last house on needless street: in this story there's a missing little girl and a strange man. Terrible things happen, just not in the way you imagine.
- mary: an awakening of terror: all time favorite! Mary is a shy, introverted woman who works at a bookstore and collects porcelain figurines. She also turned 50 recently and started seeing dead women everywhere she goes. And some other stuff too, but that's probably just menopause.
youtube channels
I have three requirements for horror youtubers: that they don't show their faces a lot, that they have voices i can understand, and that they mantain a certain amount of skepticism. That leaves me with a very limited amount of youtubers. But I rewatch religiously.
- nexpo: i started watching nexpo during the pandemic after youtube suggested me one of his "disturbing things from around the internet".
- reignbot: discovered through nexpo, and my current favorite. The topics she brings up are always super interesting to me.
- nick crowley: this is more about the thrills than the analysis (which i like from the other two), but i think he has a good selection.
online short stories
when i was a tween i was absolutely obsessed with creepypasta. then i moved on to reddit no sleep. it's been a while since the last time that i went on the sub, but i remember most of my favorite stories. Like with the rest of the categories, my picks are short and have some realistic elements.
- picture this: I can't remember where or when i read this one for the first time, but it's old. I must have been like 15 when i read it. It was a creepypasta and a lesson on not being a little shit on the internet. We had to learn somehow
- orangutans are skeptical: this is was number one for 17 year old me. the premise seems simple enough: a guy whose brain doesn't register change is on trial for the disappearance of his mother.
- autopilot: to this day I fear forgetting my phone on the counter.
- this picture from the 1996 K-Mart Teen Fall Catalogue has a very peculiar story behind it: i wonder if he ever fou nd that pictur e
